NTT DATA and Vatican Library revolutionize digital archives with Web3 and NFTs

NTT DATA’s collaboration with the Vatican Library brings Web3 technology to the forefront of digital archives, while NFTs create new connections between the Library and its supporters.
Preserving cultural heritage with AMLAD and Web3 technology
Since 2014, NTT DATA has been working with the Vatican Library to digitize their vast collection of manuscripts, printed books, coins, medals, prints, and drawings through their “AMLAD” digital archiving solution. With over two million assets, the partnership aims to preserve these valuable pieces of human history while making them accessible worldwide.
Digitizing these cultural treasures not only safeguards them from deterioration but also allows researchers to access the Library’s holdings from anywhere in the world. AMLAD ensures that the data is stored according to international library classifications and standards, as well as the Vatican Library’s own rules.
Expanding the Vatican Library’s online community with NFTs
In February 2023, NTT DATA and the Vatican Library launched the “Vatican Library Web3 Support Project,” the first initiative of their “Web3 Community Platform.” The project connects the Library with its supporters through blockchain technology and rewards them with NFTs for sharing the initiative on social media or showing their support for the Library.
By owning these NFTs, supporters gain access to high-resolution images of 15 cultural heritage items owned by the Library, along with explanatory texts created specifically for the project. This new connection between the Vatican Library and its supporters is made possible by NTT DATA’s innovative use of Web3 technology.
According to the head of the AMLAD project at NTT DATA, Asahi Hasebe:
- “There are a large number of valuable cultural assets stored in cultural institutions around the world. However, you can only see them by going there, and even if you go there, it is very difficult to find what you are looking for. However, if digital data is properly archived, it is possible to easily and freely find and view what you want, no matter where in the world you are”.
AMLAD: the future of digital archives and accessibility
The AMLAD solution is a game-changer in the world of digital archiving. Designed not just for preservation, but also for promoting usage, AMLAD focuses on simplifying search systems and enabling the quick location of data and documents. This advanced solution grants researchers from around the globe access to the Vatican Library’s digitized content, regardless of their location.
Moreover, AMLAD adheres to international data structures and library classifications, ensuring compliance with both global standards and the Vatican Library’s specific rules. With AMLAD at the helm, the future of digital archives promises to be more accessible and user-friendly than ever before.
NTT DATA’s commitment to Web3 development
As a result of the successful collaboration with the Vatican Library, NTT DATA will continue to improve and expand their services based on Web3 technology. The potential of Web3 to create connections and communities based on individual intentions and trust signifies a new era in digital archiving.
NTT DATA’s dedication to exploring the value and significance of Web3 throughout society demonstrates their commitment to driving innovation and enabling clients to move confidently into the digital future.
With NTT DATA and the Vatican Library joining forces, it’s safe to say that this partnership is truly a “heavenly” match in the world of digital archiving.
