LeBron James drives NFT sales to new heights with a record-breaking moment

LeBron James, a global basketball icon, made history on Tuesday by breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record. The much-anticipated moment has caused a surge in NFT sales on NBA Top Shot, a platform developed by Dapper Labs.

LeBron James NFT sales soar, breaking records

NBA Top Shot recorded an impressive $234,000 in LeBron NFT sales from Sunday to Tuesday. This marks the largest total for the Los Angeles Lakers star on the platform since May 2022 and represents nearly 2,500 individual NFT sales.

The sales of LeBron James NFTs have seen a significant increase since Sunday. One of the NFT moments sold for an impressive $13,500, making it the largest Top Shot sale of the week, according to data from DappRadar. This surge in sales showcases the growing popularity and demand for LeBron James NFTs on the platform, even though the athlete had already made his NFT debut in March of last year.

Lebron James and NFT hysteria

LeBron James’ impact on the NFT market extends beyond just the secondary sales. Dapper Labs recently released a new drop of 100,000 NFT collectible packs, available for purchase at $9 each. Starting from February 23rd, every buyer will receive a bonus pack with a single NFT, and some of these buyers will receive the highly sought-after NFT of LeBron’s record-breaking shot. Only 99 editions of this NFT will be minted on NBA Top Shot, adding to its exclusivity and value.

A portion of LeBron James’ record-breaking shot is up for grabs on NBA Top Shot. 25 of the 99 available editions have been set aside for the platform’s top collectors, while the remaining will be given to those who purchase the $9 NFT pack. So far, NBA Top Shot has generated a staggering $1.05 billion in marketplace trades, according to CryptoSlam.

The recent milestone achieved by LeBron James in the NBA has translated into a boost for NBA Top Shot’s marketplace sales, which have risen by 35% in the past seven days. This surge is believed to be partially attributed to the historic event.

On the platform, LeBron James NFTs have consistently been a hot commodity, with the highest-ever sale being a moment from the superstar that fetched an impressive $388,000 through an off-chain auction in April of 2021.

The surge in popularity surrounding LeBron James is spilling over to other NFT platforms as well. Sorare NBA, a licensed Ethereum NFT fantasy basketball game, is currently auctioning a limited edition LeBron James trading card, with the highest bid at 5 ETH, approximately $7,600.

This comes after Sorare NBA broke its own record for the highest NFT sale last weekend, with a Giannis Antetokounmpo NFT being auctioned off for 113.9 ETH, which is equivalent to over $187,000.

Ball is life

Many basketball professionals are joining the web3 space and creating NFT collections for fans. This trend has led to the creation of NFT virtual sneakers by Scottie Pippen, the former Chicago Bulls player, and the development of the Curryverse, a metaverse project based on the four-time NBA champion Steph Curry.
