Hockey joins NFT sports market with NHL Breakaway

Two years after other major sports leagues entered the burgeoning NFT space, the National Hockey League (NHL) has announced its foray with NHL Breakaway, a new initiative in collaboration with Sweet, a platform known for creating NFT collectibles.

NHL Breakaway

NHL Breakaway had previously opened in beta to early adopters earlier this year, but now it extends its reach to the general public, widening the scope of its user base.

The platform is set to revolutionize how fans interact with hockey by offering a unique way to collect, trade, and display digital versions of video highlights. These collectibles, minted on the Polygon network, an Ethereum scaling solution, bring an exciting dimension to the fan experience.

Sweet, a platform tailored for brands to create and manage NFT collectibles, is at the forefront of this collaboration. The specifics of the deal between Sweet and the NHL, however, remain undisclosed.

David Lehanski, NHL’s Executive Vice President of Business Development & Innovation, expressed his enthusiasm about the launch:

“We’ve been committed to developing digital collectibles designed and customized for the NHL and wholly focused on connecting with hockey fans in the most authentic and engaging manner possible,”

Series 1 starter pack

To kickstart the excitement, NHL Breakaway has introduced a Series 1 starter pack. Priced at $19, the pack contains six NFT collectibles, with a total of 5,000 Series 1 packs available for enthusiasts. These packs feature memorable moments from renowned players like Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, and Alexander Ovechkin, making them a coveted item for fans and collectors alike.

A delight for hockey fans

The NHL Breakaway platform stands out with its array of features designed to create a community among hockey fans. Collectors can interact in the Trade Lounge, showcase their fandom through public profiles, and even participate in challenges that offer real-life rewards. This gamification aspect adds an extra layer of engagement, encouraging fans to participate in the digital collectible ecosystem actively.

Drawing inspiration from similar platforms like Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot and NFL All Day, NHL Breakaway’s collectibles are based on actual video highlights from the league. These highlights include multiple camera angles and audio components, offering a rich, immersive experience for collectors.

Milestone for NFT Sports

The launch of NHL Breakaway is not just a milestone for the league but also for the sports collectibles market. It reflects the growing trend of major sports leagues integrating digital collectibles into their marketing and fan engagement strategies.
